After another mass shooting in an American school, this time taking 17 lives in Florida's Broward School District, it is time for our school district's leadership to act.
The Bend Fire Department and the St. Charles Trauma Surgery team have generously offered to bring "Stop The Bleed" training to Bend-La Pine schools free of charge, as they have done for staff and students at COCC and OSU-Cascades.
Teachers and staff have expressed enthusiasm for it, as have fellow parents. ...And for a few thousand dollars the district could place bleeding control kits with the AEDs at every school, where all students and staff could easily access them in an emergency.
It is hard to digest that this is a concern facing our schools today. The reality is, we must do all we can to be prepared for any situation, especially when it involves our kids.
